I say surprise because the numbers are outside my comfort zone, and while I have nothing against them, the other divers at Grand Seiko have never made me stand out. Well, I'm happy to say that my preconception was incorrect, as it wears so well and looks absolutely gorgeous. The Evolution 9 DNA shines at its best here, as its streamlined angles and facets allow the diver to get bigger, at just 13.8mm, making it the thinnest in its class. The low-riding design also balances the bezel, adding some visual thickness. Also, the Black Stream watch face is stunning. At some angles, it appears completely black, while at other angles, subtle textures in the black appear dynamically, creating a subtle variation. Catch the light and waves appear. It's dark, mysterious, and gorgeous. Add to that the new generation 9RA5 5-day Spring Drive movement and you have an impressive dive watch.

Before the Evolution 9 series, Grand Seiko sports watches felt like isolated pieces. GMT here, divers there, chronographs at times, and some extra luminous...all sporty, of course, but not part of a single concept. By building on the Evolution 9, Grand Seiko has created a more cohesive sub-collection of sports watches than ever before. Three new collections, each with its own personality, style and purpose, but sharing a core DNA. From here, they can apply colors, textures, and materials to create sets within sets.
